Men's Watch FAQ: Materials, Movements, Sizing & Style Questions Answered

Buying a watch brings up plenty of questions that have nothing to do with shipping or returns — what a movement actually is, how a watch should fit, whether "stainless steel" really matters. Here are straight answers to the questions we hear most from Heroforce customers, organized by topic. Looking for shipping, returns, or order help instead? Visit our general FAQ.

Materials & Craftsmanship

What does "stainless steel case" actually mean?

It means the case and, in most models, the band are made from a steel alloy resistant to rust and corrosion, rather than a plated base metal that can wear or discolor over time. It's the industry standard for durable, long-lasting watches.

Is stainless steel hypoallergenic?

Most people can wear stainless steel without any skin reaction, which is why it's the most common material used in quality watches. If you have a known nickel sensitivity, look specifically for "nickel-free" or surgical-grade steel listings.

What's the difference between silver-tone, gold-tone, and two-tone finishes?

These describe the plating or finish applied over the steel case, not different base materials. Silver-tone gives a clean, versatile look; gold-tone adds a warmer, more formal feel; two-tone combines both for a style that stands out without being flashy.

Movement & Mechanics

What's the difference between quartz and automatic movements?

Quartz movements run on a battery and are extremely accurate with minimal upkeep. Automatic movements are powered by the natural motion of your wrist and appeal to people who value mechanical craftsmanship over pure precision. See our full automatic vs quartz breakdown for details.

Do quartz watches need a battery replacement often?

Typically once every one to two years, depending on the watch and how it's used. It's a quick, inexpensive fix at most jewelers or watch repair shops.

What does "Japanese quartz movement" mean?

It refers to the movement being manufactured by a Japanese movement maker, widely regarded for reliability and accuracy. It's a strong signal of build quality inside the watch, even though it isn't visible from the outside.

Why do some watches have extra dials on the face?

Those are sub-dials on a chronograph watch, which adds a built-in stopwatch function. Learn how to use them in our chronograph guide.

Sizing & Fit

How do I know what watch size fits my wrist?

Measure around your wrist bone with a soft tape or a strip of paper, then check that against the watch's case diameter (usually listed in millimeters). As a general guide, a case between 40–44mm suits most average to larger men's wrists, while 38–40mm suits smaller wrists.

Can a metal watch band be resized?

Yes. Most metal bands use removable links that a jeweler (or sometimes you, with a small link-removal tool) can take out or add back in to adjust the fit.

How snug should a watch fit?

You should be able to fit a fingertip between the band and your wrist. Too loose and it will spin or slide over your wrist bone; too tight and it can feel uncomfortable after a few hours.

Style & Care

How many watches should a man actually own?

There's no fixed number, but most men are well covered with two or three: one everyday steel watch, one sportier or more casual option, and one dressier piece for formal occasions.

Can I wear the same watch with both casual and formal outfits?

A simple stainless steel watch with a clean dial is versatile enough for both. Bolder styles — skeleton dials, chronographs, or brightly finished cases — tend to lean more casual or statement-driven.

How do I keep my watch looking new?

Wipe it down after wearing, avoid direct contact with lotion or perfume, and store it away from direct sunlight when not in use. Our full watch care guide covers this in detail.

Is a watch still relevant if I check the time on my phone?

Absolutely — today a watch is worn far more for style than necessity. It's one of the few accessories that's visible during a handshake, a meeting, or a dinner, which is exactly what makes it worth choosing carefully.
